THE OPPORTUNITY

New Century Chamber Orchestra is seeking a strategic, relational, and results-driven Director of Development to work with newly-appointed Executive Director, David Taylor. This is a leadership role for a development professional with experience building and maintaining donor relationships, engaging board members in fundraising, leading a comprehensive annual fund strategy and overseeing gala and small group gatherings.

The Director of Development will work in close partnership with the ED, Board of Directors, Music Director and musicians. This position will be supported by a Development Coordinator and a Patrons Services & Office Manager. The ideal candidate will be a visible and engaged public representative of New Century and will thrive in a small, collaborative team, bringing energy and focus to a robust yet growing fundraising program.

We achieve this through the virtuosic performance of chamber orchestra masterworks, commissions of new music, and innovative collaborations that span genres. New Century fosters an intimate relationship with audiences, showcasing diverse musical voices to connect music of past and present.”

Founded in 1992, this 19-member group is led by acclaimed violinist and Music Director Daniel Hope. New Century performs five subscription concert sets a year, with a few smaller chamber music and donor events. It is supported by a 17-member Board and a staff of five, with an Annual Operating Budget of $1.6 million.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and implement fundraising goals and strategies, keeping a scheduled approach to meeting deadlines.
  • Build and implement strategies to identify and engage new supporters across giving levels and sources, including a thorough survey of institutional / government funding sources.
  • Manage a personal portfolio of donors and prospects, including cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of our supporters.
  • Manage and lead grant applications, including the grant calendar, application deadlines, and reporting processes.
  • Oversee an emerging planned giving program.
  • Prepare and present updates for Board meetings.
  • Lead the execution of the annual Gala (March 2026) and smaller donor events.
  • Budget, manage and track Contributed Income results against goal and Development expenses.
  • Oversee donor data integrity, gift tracking, and acknowledgments via Patron Manager (Salesforce).


CANDIDATE PROFILE

  • Self-motivated, strategic thinker who enjoys building relationships and closing gifts.
  • Comfortable guiding board members and ED in donor strategy and building a culture of asking and giving.
  • Minimum 5 years of nonprofit fundraising experience in a leadership capacity
  • Familiarity with classical music and the arts, and the ability to communicate their value with clarity and enthusiasm.
  • Demonstrated success managing campaigns and working directly with donors and leadership.
  • Knowledge and ease to use of donor management systems (Patron Manager or Salesforce preferred).
  • Ability and availability to work occasional evenings and weekends for concerts and occasional donor events.


COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • Starting salary: $110,000–$120,000+, commensurate with experience
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 2% employer SIMPLE IRA contribution
  • Hybrid schedule with two days in-office (San Francisco)
  • Four weeks paid vacation plus company holidays
